Fraud and Scams in Thailand

Fraud and scams are common in Thailand. Two most common inquiries we receive are for romance scams, and offers to export products at what would have been very good prices. Mainstream corporate problems have included suspected collusion with competitors, unaccountability of stock, and embezzlement. We have also done work on insurance cases such as personal injury claim for workers compensation.

Notably, most mainstream business in Thailand is legitimate and honorable, and having been involved in various businesses myself. For most of my investigative cases, I am contacted because the client already suspects or has experienced fraud, or else feels a need to do some due diligence checking to try to find out whether they are at risk of being scammed before they commit to something. Our investigative cases have typically been very suspicious or after the event has clearly occurred.

Corporate internal fraud is usually done by Thai employees and contractors, whereby it helps to have a deep familiarity with the Thai culture and experience. One of our Managing Directors was previously a senior manager in one of Thailand's largest mid-market retail chains with well over a decade of experience working her way up. (Two of her co-workers followed her to switch to work for our company.)

However, many of the scams have foreign criminals behind them, but use Thai people as their front and proxies for payment.

Thailand is a very popular tourist destination, but attracts many people who have addictive lifestyles -- to the nightlife and ladies, as well as substance abuse. Some places, such as the seaside party town Pattaya (Chonburi 20150), certain microcosms within Bangkok, and Koh Samui, have foreign criminal gangs who forge documents and have contacts with corrupt policemen and legitimate business people. Many of them routinely recruit Thai people and other foreigners to participate in their schemes. They typically have no legitimate income in Thailand and support their lifestyle on scams and fraudulent activities preying on people and businesses overseas. These groups and their fraud infrastructure can result in skilled and fairly sophisticated operations on innocent and unsuspecting victims.
